Founders Story
I’m James, the creator of Athletica, and someone who’s spent years deeply involved in the sporting world — not just as a participant, but as an AFL umpire, mentor, and supporter of athlete development. My journey in umpiring has shaped a lot of who I am today. It taught me discipline, consistency, resilience under pressure and, most importantly, how much structure and preparation truly matter when you’re performing in high-stakes environments.
Working as an umpire gave me a unique perspective. I wasn’t just watching the game — I was seeing the habits, routines, and physical demands behind the scenes. I saw athletes striving to improve but sometimes lacking the tools or guidance to track their progress, build confidence, and understand what actually moves the needle. It became clear that talent alone isn’t enough. Athletes need systems. They need clarity. They need support that adapts with them.
That realisation is what sparked Athletica.
For years, I’d watched players and umpires alike work incredibly hard but still feel unsure about their development. Training wasn’t always personalised, feedback wasn’t consistent, and progress was often difficult to measure. I wanted to create something that solved those problems — a smarter, accessible platform that gives every athlete and every official the kind of structure that leads to real improvement.
Athletica reflects everything sport has taught me: preparation matters, performance can be built, and greatness comes from the details you improve every day. This platform is my way of passing on the lessons I’ve learned from the umpiring community and giving athletes a clearer pathway to reach their own potential.
At the end of the day, I’m someone who genuinely loves helping people grow. If Athletica can guide athletes and umpires toward their best version of themselves, then every bit of time and effort put into creating it has been worth it. And this is only the beginning.
